Set across India and now-Pakistan, Mumal and Mahindra is one of a few ancient folklores to have survived. Both a Sindhi and Rajasthani folklore, the love story follows Mumal the most beautiful Rajput in Rajasthan at the time and her consort, Mahindra.
As many suitors lined up at her palace in Jaisalmer, Mumal and her sisters devised a plan to put them through a series of tests and tricks before entering the palace. Many would not make it and according to legend, lost their lives.

As more and more suitors found out about her beauty and where she lived, eventually 4 travellers decided to make a trip to her palace. One of the 4, known for his intelligence and bravery, was Mahindra. So impressed was Mumal by his ability to reach the palace that she accepted him as her consort.
In love, the pair continued to meet for a prolonged period of time with Mumal reaching the palace on a camel at night and returning to his home at dawn.
One night, Mahindra was waylaid by the change of his quick camel and got lost in the dark. While waiting, Mumal and her sisters started dressing up imitating the love between the couple. However, they became tired and fell asleep before Mahindra eventually found his way.
Reaching Jaisalmer only close to dawn, Mahindra eagerly entered the palace only to mistake one of Mumal’s sisters as a man. Heartbroken, he hurriedly left leaving his travelling cane behind.
After realising that her lover had mistaken her sister as a man, Mumal travelled to Mahindra only to be turned away by him. To prove her innocence, she jumped into a fire. Upon hearing this, Mahindra too joined her.
